(Moncton, N.B.) – February 4th, 2015 – Taking place under the tagline 'Not beyond us', World Cancer Day takes a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting that solutions do exist across the continuum of cancers, and that they are within our reach. This year's campaign focuses on four key areas: choosing healthy lives, delivering early detection, achieving treatment for all and maximising quality of life.

Considering that one out of 2.5 Atlantic Canadian will be affected by cancer in their lifetime, it is crucial to work together in discovering better diagnostic tools, more precise treatments and targeted therapies. At the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI), scientists are working with partners in Canada and around the world to discover the genetic origins of cancer and pursuing three main areas of development: early detection of disease, enhanced diagnosis, and targeted treatment. It is an exciting time for cancer research as great discoveries have been made and are leading us towards personalized medicine and targeted treatments.

"Thanks to the progress made by research and technological advancements available today, we can now more precisely identify the causes of many types of cancer which in turn allows us to determine the optimal treatment for a given patient. The era of personalized medicine is here and it will continue to drive better outcomes in cancer treatment." Says Dr. Rodney Ouellette, President and Scientific Director at ACRI.

World Cancer Day 2015 is a unique opportunity to raise awareness that there is much that can be done at an individual, community and governmental level, to harness and mobilise these solutions and catalyse positive change. By moving forward together, cancer is not beyond us. "Over the years, the community has supported and contributed to ACRI's activities. With this great support ACRI is able to continue its cancer research, with the ultimate goal of finding ways to improve outcomes for patients and their families." Says Sophie Thériault, Director of Business Development and Communications at ACRI. "Did you know that Atlantic Canada has the highest cancer rates in the country? This is why we need to support cancer research that is done here, in Atlantic Canada."

On this day of awareness, we ask that you join us in celebrating those who have proven that cancer research is helping in the fight against cancer; that we can overcome this terrible disease by raising awareness of the successes. Cancer Research Saves Lives!
