Atlantic Cancer Research Institute Researcher Receives Prestigious Fellowship

(Moncton, NB) – April 4, 2013 – The Atlantic Cancer Research Institute congratulates Dr. Guillaume Desnoyers, Postdoctoral Researcher, who recently received one of only two postdoctoral fellowships awarded in Atlantic Canada from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
This prestigious three year fellowship provides support for highly qualified candidates in all areas of health research at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.
"The competition for these fellowships is very intense," says Dr. Stephen Lewis, Research Scientist at ACRI. "Out of 659 applications, only 134 were funded, which puts Guillaume in the top 20% of post-docs in Canada."

Guillaume is working alongside Dr. Lewis to gain an understanding of the mechanism of breast cancer metastasis. This research is uncovering how breast cancer cells become mobile and move to other parts of the body (metastasis) so that we may develop better tools for the early detection of metastatic breast cancer, as well as better treatments.

"In order to build successful research programs we need to attract the best and the brightest young scientists to ACRI," says Dr. Rodney Ouellette, President and Scientific Director of ACRI. "Achievements such as a CIHR fellowship award are evidence that Dr. Desnoyers is in an elite category of researchers in Canada and we are pleased that he chose to pursue his research at ACRI. It also demonstrates that senior researchers like Dr. Stephen Lewis are running very successful projects that are attracting these talented individuals."
